What can a birthday calculator tell you?

Beyond a precise age, a date of birth carries a handful of fun, shareable facts: which Western zodiac sign and Chinese zodiac animal you fall under, which day of the week you were born, how many days remain until your next birthday, and the exact dates your milestone birthdays land on. This tool gathers all of that in one place.

How your zodiac sign is determined

Western astrology divides the year into twelve signs, each tied to a fixed range of birth dates. The boundaries below are the standard, most widely cited date ranges:

The Chinese zodiac's 12-year cycle

The Chinese zodiac assigns one of twelve animals to each year in a repeating cycle. A quick reference for recent and upcoming years:

One caveat worth knowing: the Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar and lands on a different date each year (usually between 21 January and 20 February). If you were born before that date in your birth year, you technically belong to the previous year's animal — this calculator uses the simpler Gregorian-year approximation.

Milestone birthdays

Certain ages tend to get marked as milestones — 16, 18 and 21 are commonly tied to new freedoms or responsibilities in many places, while 30, 50 and 100 are widely celebrated round numbers. What counts as significant varies by culture and country, so this tool simply lists the calendar dates for the most commonly recognised milestone ages and lets you decide which matter to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a birthday calculator for?+

It pulls together the fun, shareable facts tied to a date of birth — your Western zodiac sign, your Chinese zodiac animal, the day of the week you were born, how many days until your next birthday, and the exact dates of milestone birthdays like your 18th, 21st or 50th.

How is my zodiac sign determined?+

Western (tropical) zodiac signs are assigned by fixed date ranges based on your birth month and day — for example, anyone born between 21 March and 19 April is an Aries. The calculator looks up the standard, most widely used date ranges for the twelve signs.

How is my Chinese zodiac animal worked out?+

Each year in the 12-year cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig) is assigned an animal. This calculator uses your Gregorian birth year as a simple approximation.

Why might my "real" Chinese zodiac animal be different from what this tool shows?+

The Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar and falls on a different date each year — typically between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born in that window, before the actual New Year date for your birth year, you technically belong to the previous year's animal. This tool uses the simpler Gregorian-year approximation; check the exact lunar new year date for your birth year if precision matters to you.

What does "next birthday" tell me?+

The number of days from today until your birth month and day next occur, the age you will turn, and which day of the week that birthday falls on. If today is your birthday, it shows 0 days.

Why does my birthday fall on a different day of the week each year?+

A standard year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus 1 day — so each ordinary year your birthday shifts forward one day of the week. A leap year adds an extra day, which can shift it forward by two days instead of one, depending on whether 29 February falls before or after your birthday.

What are milestone birthdays?+

Certain ages are commonly marked as milestones — for example 16, 18, 21, 30, 50 and 100 — often tied to life stages, traditions or celebrations that vary by culture and country. The calculator lists the exact calendar date each milestone falls on, along with whether it is already in the past.

Is this the same as the Age Calculator?+

No. The Age Calculator works out your precise age in years, months and days. This tool is the lighter, fun-facts companion — zodiac signs, the day you were born, and milestone dates rather than a precise age breakdown.

Can I look up someone else's birthday facts, not just my own?+

Yes — enter any date of birth. Nothing you enter is stored or linked to your identity.
